2026 Badge Summit @ CU Boulder
In-person July 13-15 | Online August 4
Tuesday July 14, 2026 3:15pm - 4:00pm MDT
Higher education has made significant progress in adopting digital badges, microcredentials, and alternative credentials. Yet many institutions are asking an important question: How do these credentials create meaningful value beyond issuance?

The future of credentialing is not simply about creating more badges. It’s about creating trusted, connected ecosystems that enable verified learning achievements to travel seamlessly across education and employment, helping learners showcase their skills and progress wherever opportunity takes them. As learners acquire skills through courses, credentials, work-based learning, certifications, and professional experiences, institutions must rethink how learning is documented, verified, shared, and recognized.

This session explores the evolution from digital credentials to learner-centered ecosystems powered by skills data, comprehensive learner records, and digital wallets. Participants will examine how institutions can make learning more visible, portable, and interoperable while strengthening employer trust and improving workforce outcomes.
Drawing on emerging research, credential innovation initiatives, and practical institutional examples, attendees will leave with a framework for designing credential strategies that connect learning to opportunity throughout a learner's lifetime.

Key Takeaway:
The future is not more credentials. The future is connected credential ecosystems that enable learners to carry trusted evidence of their skills and achievements wherever opportunity exists.
